Today was an easier walk with lots of ups and downs but much smaller ones, about 20 km altogether. No threats of blisters and carrying the pack was not difficult. I’m very pleased with how my body is handling this, though I know that problems can crop up a week or so into the walk.
I met a kimdred spirit last evening as we were both checking my guidebook for the best place to stay. Her name is Astaria and we clicked right away. So we both stayed in a brand new private albergue in Zubiri. What a find! The €15 included a free beer on arrival, pleasant rooms sleeping six or eight and comfy beds. It also included breakfast and the option of dinner at very reasonable prices. Laundry, too. We got the last two beds. Over dinner and breakfast we had wonderful conversations with the other guests.
We walked together all, day, sometimes, by agreement, in silence and sometimes in conversation. Astaria is from England and does energetic healing work of some kind. Our conversations were rich opportunities to reflect on the things we saw, the people we met and the world within. We share a belief that every being contains the divine spark within and found ourselves looking for that even in people we didn’t like much. It seems that identifying and letting go of our judgements of others is a never ending task.
When we came into the city we travelled several km through suburbs before climbing from the river valley and through the old fortified city walls. We had to search a bit to find this private albergue but after a rest and a shower we went looking for a place to eat. As we entered the nearby square we realized that some kind of festival was happending with many balloons, costumes, dancers and drummers. It was wonderful.
The dinner itself was only so-so and after a walk for fresh air we returned for bed. In contrast to earlier, the streets were packed with people eating, drinking and laughing. It was a huge contrast to the serenity we had been experiencing but it was good energy. There were lots of parents with children, too. Pamplona has about 200,000 people and it seems a vibrant city.
It’s late and I must sleep. Buen camino, my friends.
